rmckinney@joplinglobe.com Barack Obama may look at women in politics in Kansas or Missouri as his choice for a running mate. Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., each have been mentioned as possible running mates for the presumed Democratic presidential nominee. Sources say each would bring different benefits to Obama’s campaign and potential administration. The question remains as to whether Hillary Clinton supporters would support any woman other than Clinton in the position. On the Republican side, U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., has received some attention as a possible running mate for John McCain. Ron Rubin wrote in The Jewish Press in April that: “Brownback would bring credentials important to the Republican base such as his staunch pro-life record and the congressional amendment he introduced banning same-sex marriage.” Burdett Loomis, political science professor at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, said Brownback is a long-shot. He said Brownback in the primaries was competing for the same voters as Mike Huckabee, and Huckabee ran circles around Brownback. “I don’t think he’s got a lot going for him,” Loomis said of Brownback. “This election’s going to be won in the middle” of the electorate. The most often-mentioned choice for a McCain running mate among media sources seems to be Mitt Romney. Wonder Woman? As for Obama’s choice for a vice presidential nominee, Terry Michael, director of the Washington Center for Politics and Journalism, heaped praise on McCaskill this week in a piece on Politico.com titled “McCaskill: Obama’s ‘Wonder Woman?’” He wrote that McCaskill’s biggest talent is as a communicator, as she has demonstrated while campaigning for Obama. “She is unflappable, genuine, likable, feminine, strong, warm, articulate, tough,” Michael wrote. “The list of pleasing human attributes could go on and on.” McCaskill said she is flattered by the attention. “Obviously, it’s an honor even to be mentioned,” McCaskill said. “I trust Barack Obama’s judgment to make the right decision. I fully expect to be working for Missourians in the U.S. Senate for many years to come.”
